Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban is located in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on the north side of Manik Mia Avenue. Parliamentary area is about one-fifth of the entire Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. There is an artificial lake around the nine-storey building, which is built in a circular casting of concrete on the chest of a huge open courtyard on 108 acres of land. The clear water of the lake reflects the image of tall buildings. This Parliament building is the immortal masterpiece of the famous American architect Louis I. Can. It is a wonderful example of modern architectural design. The plan for this building was adopted in 1959. The original design was approved in 1962 and construction began in 1964 in the second capital of Pakistan (now Sher-e-Bangla Nagar). When the anti-Ayub movement started in 1989 after the completion of about eighty percent of the work, its construction work was stopped. After the independence of the country, the work of the Parliament was started at the Provincial Council Building (current Prime Minister's Office) in Nakhal Para. And the remaining work at the National Assembly building resumed. Work on the parliament building was completed in 1982. The building is a self-contained complex divided into nine separate blocks. In the lower floor of the central block in the middle is the main hall room of 354 seats. Parliament sits there. It is surrounded by four office blocks. There are no columns anywhere in the main building. There are columns in the hollow part of the triangle to keep the balance of the structure. Light air can easily enter the main building through this empty part. Huge open courtyard across the circular lake outside the parliament building. Hundreds of men and women walk in the open desert of the south in the morning and evening. It is a beautiful place for leisure.
